Testing the Toughness of Stainless Steel Pipes:
There are three main ways to measure the hardness of stainless steel pipes: Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages:
Brinell Hardness: This is the most common method. It measures the width of an indentation left by a steel ball pressed into the pipe. It's easy to understand but not ideal for very hard or thin pipes.
Rockwell Hardness: Similar to Brinell, it uses an indentation test, but it measures the depth of the indentation instead. Rockwell is more versatile, working with a wider range of metal hardness. It's also simpler to use than Brinell, with readings directly displayed on the machine. However, the indentation is smaller, making the results slightly less precise.
Vickers Hardness: This method uses a diamond-shaped indenter to create a small indentation. It's ideal for very thin pipes and surface layers. Vickers combines the advantages of Brinell and Rockwell but is less common in pipe standards and slightly more complex than Rockwell.
Choosing the Right Test:
The best test for your pipe depends on its thickness and hardness. Brinell is a good starting point, but for harder or thinner pipes, Rockwell might be a better option. Vickers is rarely used in pipe standards but can be useful for specific situations.

Where: P-test pressure, MPa;
R-stress, take 50% of yield point, MPa;
S-Nominal wall thickness of steel pipe, mm;
D- the nominal outer diameter of the steel pipe, mm.
W=(outer diameter-wall thickness)×wall thickness×0.02491=KG/M (weight per meter).
